Skateboarding: Gagnon and On
While the fires burned in Malibu, the deep fryer bubbled and the skateboarders
padded up at the California State Fair in Pomona. It was a hot afternoon,
and you could just taste the ash in the air. Two hours before the comp started,
the judges convened and made a decision to switch the format to a two-run
system. The sixty-minute jam session became an hour practice that turned average
fair-goers into avid skateboard fans, who couldn’t help but admire

Inline: The Brazilian Waxes the Competition
It was a strange combination of competitors on the vert ramp: British rookie
Rich Parker
, World Champion Street skater,
Chris Haffey
and Hawaiian-born
Thumper Nagasako
all showed up for the prelims. So did
Matt Lindenmuth
, who
left the realm of inline skating after his 2003 season to pursue a career
in snowboarding. After a few hours on the LG ramp, however, Lindy was smiling.

On Saturday morning, the Santa Ana winds died down, which was good for two
reasons. First of all, it enabled the LA County Fire Dept to bring the Malibu
blaze under control, and second, it meant that the bike riders would be able
to soar without fear of cross winds. And soar they did. From 16 year-old
