Moll de Marina – “Whoever said ‘Spaniards don’t get up early’ didn’t know what he was talking about,” said judge Jared Souney. It was 10:30 am and the stands were already packed beyond capacity just to watch the BMX park warm-up.
By their second
day on the course,
the riders were already looking more comfortable. Juan Ruiz was transferring every direction between the spine and the box; Clement Cerf
figured out how to pull fufanus up on the hitching post on top of the big quarterpipe. By 11:00, it was anybody’s game.
Still, the results weren’t surprising. Cerf finished in 4th. Axel Juergens barnstormed the course, threw an X-up 360 and finished with a bronze. Daniel Peoafiel went big, throwing whips and 360s over everything to take silver. And Sergio Layos of Madrid, Spain finished with the gold with a complete run that included 360s both ways and a whip on the quarterpipe.
With a podium full of Latin American riders, the Spaniards were amped.
